Product seeding is all about sending hundreds or thousands of products to carefully selected influencers.
It’s not a new strategy, but after over a decade in digital marketing, I’ve seen only a few brands do it right.
Here’s the usual scenario: A digital marketing manager creates an influencer marketing strategy, sends products to influencers, and pays them to create content.
They say, “My CMO friend swears by nano- and micro-influencers. Just sign up for an influencer marketing platform, offer products, and pay influencers to post”.
However, there are fundamental problems with this approach.
Enter Product Seeding.
This is where you carefully select influencers with 30K to 150K followers.
You need to do your homework and make sure they have a history of posting about products they genuinely love—organically, with no #ad in sight.
Then, you reach out and offer to send them a product to try.
But here’s the key: YOU WILL NOT OFFER TO PAY THEM.
If you do, you’ll end up in a long negotiation, and they’ll demand ridiculous rates.
About half of them will say yes, depending on your industry. Then, you send them a beautifully packaged product with a personal note and something memorable.
YOU WILL NOT ASK THEM TO POST ABOUT IT.
If you do, refer back to those ridiculous rates.
When they receive your package, you’ve done such a great job with the unboxing experience that around 30% of them will post about it on their socials—organically. That’s your first win.
The next win is that you can repost their content on your channels (just ask—they’ll probably say yes).
Finally, shower them with love, and ask if you can license their post to run as an ad for 30 days. This is where you pay them, but only $100 or $200—not the $5,000 they’d usually charge for creating content.
If your product costs $10 to $50 and is lightweight, send out thousands over 6 to 12 months. If it’s more expensive or heavy, send fewer and treat each delivery like royalty to boost your chances of getting the “post effect”.
So there you go—product seeding gives you a triple win at a relatively low cost.
Do it right, and you won’t regret it.
